ALBUQUERQUE PRESS WOMEN E-GRAM

October 1, 2008

Greetings members and friends of Press Women. There has been little other news over the last several weeks than the news of the troubled U.S. economy. In March, Bear Sterns Cos., amid falling stock prices and a lack of confidence, was purchased by JP Morgan Chase & Co. In July, we witnessed the seizure of IndyMac Bank by federal regulators after it buckled under the pressures of tighter credit, plummeting home prices and increasing foreclosures. Last month was a frenzy of activity in the U.S. housing, lending, insurance and other financial markets including the government rescue of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two companies that together hold or guarantee half of the country's mortgage loans.

As this message is written, Congress is still debating on how exactly to bail out Wall Street, while millions of Americans have already lost their homes to foreclosure. Are we in an economic freefall? Can a federal bailout begin to turn things around? While Wall Street CEOs get rescued, how will all of this affect middle America?

Economist Scott Goold will attempt to make sense of all of this for us at the next Albuquerque Press Women monthly luncheon, 11:45 a.m., Monday, Oct. 13 at the MCM Elegante, the former Holiday Inn Midtown, 2020 Menaul Blvd NE, just east of University Blvd.

Goold is a political economist currently conducting economic and policy analysis for the New Mexico Workers' Compensation Administration. An Idaho native, Goold attended college on an athletic scholarship majoring in economics. He was recognized for his scholastic efforts being named an Academic All American for performance in the classroom and on the basketball court. His professors made an exception to department rules and invited Goold, the first undergraduate in the program's history, to conduct economic field research. Their collaboration led to the development of an economic forecasting tool, the "Potato Model," that was adopted by Idaho's state government.

After traveling to a number of foreign countries playing professional basketball and working for a time in California, Goold came to New Mexico in the early* 1990s. He taught public policy, combining econometrics and political science, at the University of New Mexico, and directed research operations that focused on public opinion. During this time his work focused on environmental research, including the WIPP site and radioactive waste transportation and storage issues; contingent economic valuation associated with the silvery minnow crisis; and national security issues related to energy and terrorism. Luncheons are open to the public.

For reservations, contact Janet Ford by the Wednesday before the luncheon (Oct. 8), at 720-7821 or E-Mail. Members and their first-time guests, $15; nonmembers, $21. You may select a vegetarian meal. Your reservation is our commitment to reserve your lunch, and your commitment to pay. No shows WILL be billed.
