Featured panelists are Maria Elena Alvarez, Publisher/Editor of Prime Time, a monthly newspaper for New Mexicans 50 plus; Jill Duval, Founder/Publisher New Mexico Woman magazine, and Barbe Awalt, Co-publisher/Managing Editor, Tradicion Revista, the Journal of Contemporary and Traditional Spanish Colonial Art and Culture. They will discuss their publications, how they rose to their positions, and what materials they buy and whom they hire. Members $15, nonmembers $21. Reservations: contact Janet Ford by Nov. 6th at 275-9724 or presswomen@yahoo.com Please tell Janet if you want a vegetarian meal. Your reservation is your commitment to pay. Special Member Discount for Media Guide. This member perk alone makes APW membership a good deal. APW and New Mexico News MediaGuide are offering the 2003 edition (now at the press) at a great discount to our members. The normal price is $36.95. If at least 20 members sign up by emailing presswomen@yahoo.com), our price will be $26.95 each. We are about 11 people short. OPPORTUNITIES - Web Site Chair Cary Herz has got our site plans moving forward, despite recovering from surgery. Cary reports she is doing well and has some exciting new photography commissions. We all wish her a hearty recovery. Cary has collected information from a few members who will have their business information and services mounted on the APW web site (www.abqpresswomen.org). To get your information on the Web site, email your name, business name, address, contact numbers (be cautious about offering a home telephone number), and a description of the services you offer to abqpw@yahoo.com. Information must be sent electronically, which makes you responsible for spellings and typos. KEEPER OF THE LISTS - Another opportunity to become active in APW is volunteering to house the mailing and email lists on your computer. Membership Chair Catherine Ullett is pursuing a job opportunity in Upstate New York, and it is taking two people to replace her. Scott Alley has volunteered to move up to Membership Chair, and we need a List Keeper to handle that part of Catherine’s job that she did so well. This is perfect for someone who frequently works at a computer and can spend an hour or so a month (in fifteen minute bites) updating the two lists when new members join or present members move or change email providers. The List Keeper also clicks and sends broadcast emails, such as E-GRAMS. Please email Lynne Thomas (GLOBALenergy@comcast.net) or any Board member if you are interested. WE NEED YOU. LAST PROGRAM OF 2003 - “Unification-What’s Next” will be explored December 8th by Ray Padilla and Vickie Perea, two people most in the know about the city-county unification efforts. WRITING TIP - From Susanne Burks, her “absolute ultimate pet peeve” is the use of “may” when “might” is the correct word. “I hear this mistake daily on TV, and it's unfortunate because sometimes the misuse changes the meaning,” writes Susanne. As a reminder, “may” signifies permission, “might” denotes possibility, maybe yes, maybe no.. We had a rousing, well-attended October presentation
from the NM Library Association and ACLU. As journalists and friends of
journalism, APW plans to stay involved with both these organizations and
their struggles with the Patriot Act. Our thanks to them, and more about
their work in our next E-GRAM! |
