NEXT LUNCHEON - Attention journalists and the civic minded: December 8, 11:45 a.m., Sheraton Uptown. So Unification failed? Now what? In a special mail-in ballot election, Albuquerque and Bernalillo County citizens voted down the proposal to merge the two governments. But it ain’t over yet! On Dec. 8, Albuquerque Press Women will host Ray Padilla and Vickie Perea, chair and vice chair respectively of the Unification Charter Commission. They will explain what the Constitutional Amendment requires be done now and what the next Unification Charter Commission must accomplish.

Padilla is an attorney in private practice since 1982. He is a 1972 graduate of New Mexico State University and a 1975 graduate of Georgetown University Law. Padilla practiced law with the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. and worked for the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office. He has been involved in the unification process since the beginning.

Perea, a native New Mexican, is the current executive director of the New Mexico Christian Community Foundation and has served as regional president of Trinity International University's south Florida campus in Miami. Perea was an Albuquerque City Councilwoman from 1993-97. She attended UNM.

MARK YOUR CALENDERS: The state conference of NM Press Women will be May 21, 22 and 23. Your committee is hard at work, and things are taking shape. Preliminary plans are to kick off with a Friday night festive reception at the Maxwell Museum, UNM campus. The rest of weekend events take place at the Sheraton Uptown. Saturday morning will be a breakfast General Meeting, followed by career-enhancing workshops all day, broken by lunch, which may feature a panel. The Awards Banquet will be Sunday May 23rd.
