May 29, 2004 E-GRAM

Albuquerque Press Women -- a chapter of New Mexico Press Women, a professional organization of journalists and nonfiction media writers. APW members meet the second Monday of the month to learn new skills from leaders in the field and to network with others in writing and photography.

LAST LUNCHEON before the Summer break-- June 14, 11:45 a.m., Sheraton Uptown.

HOT TOPIC--same-sex marriage. Sandoval County Clerk Victoria Dunlap thrust the little town of Bernalillo into the national spotlight when she issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples in February of this year. Dunlap ceased when NM Attorney General Patricia Madrid issued an advisory letter declaring the licenses "invalid." On March 22, Dunlap announced she would issue licenses the next day, but the Sandoval County Commissioners and the attorney general secured a temporary restraining order.

What's next? It's in the courts and remains unresolved. Hear Dunlap's reasoning and what she sees as a possible next step.

The chapter will also elect it's new slate of officers for 2004-05. You don't want to miss this luncheon that winds up a successful year of outstanding programs and a growth in membership.

Reservations--members $15, nonmembers $21. Contact Janet Ford by March 4th at 275-9724 or abqpw@yahoo.com. Please tell Janet if you want a vegetarian meal. Your reservation is our commitment to reserve your lunch--and your commitment to pay.

WEB SITE--Recent E-GRAMS, the meeting schedule, and contact info are on the Web site at albuquerquepresswomen.org. Place your services on the special page of the site that showcases our members by sending a paragraph or two to "contact us" on the site.

The annual state conference was a great success May 21-23. We congratulate New Mexico Press Women for great workshops, trainings, reception, awards banquet, and statewide networking. Several of our members won awards and are going on to compete nationally. Congratulations!

GOOD NEWS--a northern New Mexico chapter out of Santa Fe is reviving with new folks and former members. If you are in that area and interested, you will find a link to the state web site on ours: albuquerquepresswomen.org. Organizers would love to hear from you.

A meetings resume Monday, September 13. Your next E-GRAM will come from the new president and board. It's been an exciting two years working with a terrific group of people. A wonderful Summer to all from Lynne Behnfield Thomas, president for a few more days.
