ALBUQUERQUE PRESS WOMEN HOSTS NEW MEXICO FILM OFFICE DIRECTOR

Hello Albuquerque Press Women. As your new APW president, I want to welcome you all back from your summer break. I hope you all had an enjoyable, fulfilling summer and are now ready to come back refreshed for a new fall lineup of luncheon meetings. We begin September 13 with an exciting program for you at which New Mexico Film Office Director Lisa Strout will discuss the value of attracting film projects to New Mexico in terms of jobs and the economy. New Mexico' film industry seems to have taken off over the last several years and now there are plans to develop a new studio complete with a sound stage and back lot. It's an exciting time for filmmakers and New Mexico is jumping right in with both feet. Move over Hollywood!

Also, what do filmmakers seek from reporters and the media? Strout will offer an insiders view. Strout has been in the movie business for many years, and has worked in various aspects, so she knows her stuff! In 2001, she came to work at the New Mexico State Film Office as marketing director. In January 2003, she was promoted to deputy director and now is the primary contact for potential film, TV and media projects looking to shoot in New Mexico. She and her staff coordinate projects that take advantage of New Mexico's industry-leading film incentives, including the film investment fund, tax rebate and workforce training programs.

Strout began her career working on films such as "The Verdict" and "The Bostonians." She was in charge of Merchant Ivory's New York offices and served as location manager on "Room with a View" filming in Florence, Italy. She subsequently worked as location manager on scores of feature films including "Falling Down" with Michael Douglas, "Mulholland Falls," and "Red Corner" with Richard Gere.

Mark your calendars for Monday, Sept. 13, at 11:45 a.m. at the Sheraton Uptown, Menaul/Louisiana. And if you know someone who might be interested in breaking into the business, bring him or her along. Remember, luncheons are open to the public for the non-member price of $21. But if you're a member, your guest gets the member price for the first visit. Perhaps your guest will want to join APW at the door and pay the low member price of $15. For reservations, contact Janet Ford by Sept. 9 at 275-9724.

MEMBERSHIP DUES - At our August board meeting, Albuquerque Press Women decided to make the membership year due in January from here forward. What this means is that your membership fee will be due in January so you don't have to remember what part of the year you joined in order to keep your membership current. We hope this will make things easier on you as well as us. For new members who join now, they will get the remainder of 2004 as a bonus with payment of their 2005 dues.

The price breakdown is as follows, if you are a member of National Federation of Press Women, New Mexico Press Women and Albuquerque Press Women, your APW member price is only $10. If you would only like to join at the local level, your APW is $35. We're also offering a discounted student price of $6, if the student is a member of all three organizations, or $20 for APW alone.

Why join Albuquerque Press Women? Local annual dues entitle you to the discounted member price for monthly luncheons ($15 instead of $21), these frequent E-GRAMs that serve as our newsletter and discounts for products and functions held or sponsored by Albuquerque Press Women. So recruit new members today! For more information on APW membership, visit our Web page, at www.albuquerquepresswomen.org.
