February, 2005 NEWSLETTER

February 5, 2005 - Hello members and friends of Albuquerque Press Women. I apologize for being a bit tardy with this latest communication, but I trust you all have gotten your year off to a great start. With the first month of 2005 already behind us, I think it's fair to say that we're off, full steam ahead, with an exciting year of programs for you.

Fresh from a month on the ground with troops in Iraq, Bob Martin, reporter and helicopter pilot for KRQE-TV, Ch. 13, will speak to Albuquerque Press Women Monday, Feb. 14, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sheraton Uptown, Menaul and Louisiana NE. Martin spent the holiday season in Iraq with New Mexico troops and humanitarian workers. At KRQE-TV, he reports on military affairs, science and wildfires. For past assignments, he spent two months with anti-Taliban rebels in Afghanistan and was embedded with the U.S. Army for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Martin was also assigned to the Middle East (Afghanistan) in 1986 and in 1990-91 to cover Saudi Arabia and Iraq during the military operation Desert Storm. A 1979 graduate of Eastern New Mexico University, he earned a bachelor's in communications.

As always, our luncheons are open to the public for the nonmember price of $21. But for all of you APW members, you pay only $15. Remember, members can also bring a first-time guest for the member price, so if there's anyone you know who might be interested in Martin's program, invite him/her and we may get a new member before you leave. For reservations, contact Janet Ford by Friday, Feb. 11, at 720-7821 or E-Mail. You may select a vegetarian meal. Remember, your reservation is our commitment to reserve your lunch-and your commitment to pay.

We're working on putting together some great programs for you in the coming months, including discussion of journalism school accreditation--is it necessary or not? We also hope to bring you the on-air personalities from the new FM talk radio station coming soon to Albuquerque, as well as a UNM professor who recently published a book on communications management. So remember, we meet monthly on the second Monday at the Sheraton Uptown.

Which brings me to an important question: The APW board of directors is considering changing our meeting day of the month/week, which might require us to also find another location. Should we decide to change from Mondays and away from the Sheraton, would you be prohibited from attending? We are considering changing to Thursdays and are exploring several other hotel/location options around town. I need your input, so please give me your thoughts by e-mail as soon as possible. Your comments will be considered at our next board meeting.
