FEBRUARY/MARCH 2006 NEWSLETTER

March 5, 2006 -- Hello members and friends of Albuquerque Press Women. I hope you all have made the most of this beautiful spring-like weather we've had recently. It's almost time to begin Daylight Savings Time when the days are full of more sunlight hours. Personally, I look forward to that every year. While most of us would rather be outdoors on days like this, some of us have indoor meetings to attend and sometimes, public organizations attempt to close the doors to those meetings when they're required by law to keep them open to the public.

Next week is National Sunshine Week and while that sounds like a holiday to celebrate spring, it's a time to remind various organizations and the public in general of the so-called "sunshine laws" that were designed to keep open meetings open as well as public records open. Albuquerque Press Women will recognize National Sunshine Week by hosting Elizabeth Staley, deputy executive director of the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government (NMFOG), to speak at its monthly luncheon on Monday, March 13, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sheraton Uptown, Menaul and Louisiana NE.

Staley will discuss recent efforts to keep public records and meetings open to the public as well as open government challenges specific to the state. A native New Mexican, Staley grew up in Alamogordo and occasionally worked at the Daily News while earning a journalism degree from New Mexico State University. Staley reported for the Albuquerque Journal, Albuquerque Tribune and others. She later graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Law and worked for various state agencies as attorney or counsel. It was while Staley was on the other side of the fence as counsel for the New Mexico Department of Health, often a recipient of Inspection of Public Records Act requests, that she learned more about NMFOG and executive director Bob Johnson.
