JUNE 2006 NEWSLETTER

June 6 , 2006 -- Hello members and friends of Press Women. Many of us are working journalists or come from journalism backgrounds or simply public recipients/consumers--and sometimes critics--of journalism today. Much has changed since I was in journalism school (I won't say how long ago) and a lot of those changes simply have to do with changes in the technological world. So what are future journalists learning in school these days? Join Albuquerque Press Women at our next luncheon for a peak into what is going on in New Mexico's journalism schools.

Communication and journalism chairs from New Mexico universities and colleges will share information about their programs and how instruction differs in an ever-changing technological world on Monday, June 12, from 11:45 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Sheraton Uptown, Menaul and Louisiana NE.

Kevin Mitchell directs Eastern New Mexico University's Interpersonal Communication Studies program. His research interests include family, intercultural, interpersonal and computer-mediated communication. For the past year and a half, he has taught a class delivered entirely online.

John Oetzel is chair of the University of New Mexico Department of Communication and Journalism. He teaches intercultural, health, and organizational communication and studies conflict communication in work groups, organizations.

Frank Thayer heads the Mass Communications Department at New Mexico State University. A New Mexico native, he has worked as a reporter, photographer, editor, advertising and public relations writer and educator. His teaching concentration is in news writing, editing, public opinion and propaganda.

APW luncheons are open to the public for the nonmember price of $21. Or join APW at the door and pay the low member price of $15. For reservations, contact Janet Ford by Thursday, June 8, at 720-7821 or E-Maill. Your reservation is our commitment to reserve a seat and a meal for you and your commitment to pay (no shows will be billed).

Nominating Committee Janet Ford, Sherry Robinson and Susan Walton are working hard to recruit a pool of candidates for the slate of officers. The election for your new APW board of directors will be held at the June general meeting and luncheon. We would like to see as many members present for the vote.
