An Open Senate Seat Creates Political Waves

Steve Terrell, Santa Fe New Mexican political reporter, will discuss the ripple effect of Senator Pete Domenici's (R, NM) decision to end his senatorial career at the monthly Albuquerque Press Women luncheon Monday, Nov. 12. Hear the latest on the number of candidates interested and the possibility of two more open seats -- with two sitting New Mexico members of Congress indicating runs in the Republican party primary.

Terrell is a long-time political writer for his paper and he writes a blog that covers both music and politics, and has been an NMPW presenter in the past.

Join us to hear the latest from Santa Fe and the state. Luncheon begins at 11:45 a.m. at the Sheraton Uptown hotel, Menaul & Louisiana. Members $15, nonmembers $21. ** Members'-- Dues News 2008 Dues are now payable. Remember our special membership offer is join APW now ($35 a year for ABQ-only membership, or $10 a year if you are also an NFPW and NMPW member) and get membership through the rest of 2007 and all of 2008! Join us for our luncheons to support the group and to network. Please feel free to invite friends and associates to attend! Prospective members that you bring to the lunch may receive the $15 member price at the door.

** December Luncheon--Save the Date: Dec. 10 for "Arts Networking for Media Coverage of the Events". Please spread the word to your friends in arts organizations that this lunch could give them insights into the scramble to get coverage of their organizations. Stay tuned for details, APW President Dan Mayfield is calling in favors to get the best and brightest on the speaker's table.

** October Luncheon--The audience for Phill Casaus' talk about the Albuquerque Tribune was supportive and interested to hear the details of the newspaper's situation. While Phill did not give specifics about any purchase offers -- he said he referred all such calls to the business broker Scripps is using -- he did leave us with the impression that the Trib may continue printing through this year and possibly into 2008.

Member Dues--Albuquerque Press Women Dues for 2008 are now payable. If you are a member of NMPW or NFPW the dues are $10. Or you can join just the local chapter for $10.

** Contest Deadline-- Start choosing your pieces to enter the NMPW 2007 communicator's contest, check your mail in the next weeks or check www.newmexicopresswomen.org in a couple of weeks for details.

Member perks--Check out our Web site (abqpw.org) wherein members may promote their services. If you wish to be included, send your information by e-mail to Janet Ford. Members may also have a link to their own Web sites, if they wish, at no charge.

Fashionable Pens--We have really professional pens as gifts for our speakers. They are embossed with our Web site: www.abqpw.org and have a soft grip surface. They are available for sale at the sign-in table at meetings. For just $10, they make a nice gift for the writer in your life.

** Drawing for a Prize: There is a new raffle to raise funds for the NMPW annual scholarship fund – this time it is a sturdy softcase tote stuffed with books and other goodies. Tickets are $1 each or 5 for $3. We will sell the tickets during the Dec. 10, Jan. 14 and Feb. 11 lunches and the drawing will be held on Feb. 11. You need not be present to win. And please remember to talk-up this scholarship opportunity with college students who should be encouraged to apply for it, especially where winning a scholarship will help a great student to stay in college.
