ALBUQUERQUE PRESS WOMEN E-GRAM

*** Generational Interfaces: Reaching the Hip Hop Congress at Press Luncheon

Bryan Gimbel and Shane Montoya, co-Presidents of the Hip Hop Congress-UNM will talk with us on May 12, nine days after HHC's largest annual event, NM Hip-Hop Awareness Week, and will give us background on their often mischaracterized movement.

The group that identifies with the culture of rap music -- the Hip Hop movement -- is raising funds for political causes, as well as celebrating the sounds that hit their heyday from 1985 to 1992. Its members' ages are typically teens through the 30s. The speakers can address why it is important for mainstream media to interact with this group, how the group markets to themselves, and how others can reach them and their cohorts.

The APW luncheon will be held Monday, May 12 at 11:45 a.m. at the MCM Elegante, 2020 Menaul Blvd NE, just east of University Blvd. Lunch meetings are open to the public for the nonmember price of $21 or join APW at the door and pay the low member price of $15.

For reservations, call Janet Ford at 720-7821 by Wednesday, May 7.

Background to read on our speaker/content follow: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_Hop_Congress "Hip-Hop Congress is a grassroots organization with chapters on campuses and in communities across the world. As the local New Mexico chapter, we promote Hip-Hop culture and all of its elements in a positive and peaceful way. We are committed to bringing the beauty and diversity of Hip-Hop culture to the UNM campus and the greater New Mexico community. We encourage Hip-Hop to be used as an educational tool and a vehicle for social change and greater civic involvement. We help artists by providing an international web of resources and contacts for members. We will be throwing events, teaching workshops and involving the local arts community on and off campus to promote creative forms of self-expression using all the elements of Hip-Hop." From:
