ALBUQUERQUE PRESS WOMEN E-GRAM
May 24, 2008
*** Annual Meeting and Luncheon Monday, June 9
*** New News Outlet in the Flesh at Press Luncheon
It's not everyday that a new news organization is launched. The Center for Independent Media, of Washington D.C. has started the New Mexico Independent, a new news and opinion Web page run by some of New Mexico's best-known journalists. The Independent was launched in New Mexico, at www.newmexicoindependent.com, on April 15.
A staff of eight writers, called fellows, compiles news and opinion for the site that is updated as news happens. It's an entirely new model for print journalism, based on the National Public Radio model of donations and philanthropy, not advertising, said Trip Jennings, the site's News Editor. David Alire Garcia, serves as the site's managing editor.
Jennings, a former Albuquerque Journal staff writer, will discuss the site, how it works, how it's paid for, and what he expects from the Web and news coverage. The site is one of six nationwide run by the Center.
Trip Jennings will speak at the next Albuquerque Press Women luncheon meeting, June 9 at 11:45 a.m. at the MCM Elegante, 2020 Menaul Blvd. NE, just east of University Blvd. Lunch meetings are open to the public for the nonmember price of $21 or join APW at the door and pay the low member price of $15.
For reservations, call Janet Ford at 720-7821 by Wednesday, June 4. www.newmexicoindependent.com http://newjournalist.org/
** Student lunch prices reduced: The APW Board voted in May to reduce the lunch charge for high school and college students to an amount below our cost. Full-time Students with student IDs will pay $10 for the monthly lunches. The board's intention was to remove obstacles for involvement of students in the Press Women group.
APW has no annual dues requirement for student members. For male and female students interested in joining at the state or national level, you may join the New Mexico Press Women, a state affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (contact them for dues information), or the National Federation of Press Women whose student dues are only $10 a year.
** Congratulations and thanks to the members agreeing to serve as 2008-2010 Officers: President--Dan Mayfield; Vice President--Elizabeth Staley; Treasurer--Doug Swift; and Secretary--Sari Krosinsky.
APW Nominating Committee Report, May 2008
Our bylaws state that the board "shall consist of the elected officers plus any committee chairpersons and at-large positions designated by the board."
And they state that the election is held by paper ballot in June of even-numbered years and the officers elected take office July 1 of that year for terms of two years.
So, we must have the election at the June meeting.
Our slate of officers is:
President-- Dan Mayfield
Vice President -- Elizabeth Staley
Treasurer -- Doug Swift
Secretary -- Sari Krosinsky
The ballot bears only the names of the people nominated to be officers.
Nominations will be taken from the floor. It will be up to the board to arrange for the rest of the committee positions. However, we have asked our NMPW scholarship winner, Christina Lovato, to act as UNM liaison, and she has agreed. She replaces Laurie Mellas, who had asked to turn it over to someone else.
Respectfully submitted,
Denise Tessier, Nominating Committee Chair;
and Committee members: Susanne Burks, Diana Sandoval, Laurie Mellas.
** 2008 meeting location. The luncheon meetings after June 2008 should return from the MCM Elegante, to the Sheraton (Uptown) Albuquerque on Menaul at Louisiana Blvd. NE.
** Summer Social--Come to the Press Club July 25 for some networking with Press Women. It's one of our most-requested membership features, catching up with what everyone is doing, so please come prepared to hear it all and maybe tell some, too: 5 to 8 pm at the Albuquerque Press Club, 201 Highland Park Circle, SE 243-8476, one block west of I-25, one and a half blocks south of Central. APC is a membership club, and Susan Walton is the "hosting APC member" so RSVPs ( E-Mail) are very useful, but not required- if you tell her you were invited, when you arrive at the Club.
** September Luncheon--Save the Date Sept 8 for the next Press Women luncheon.
** Members' Dues News 2008 Dues are overdue. As of January's luncheon meeting, those not current with dues have been paying nonmember prices. Dues are just $35 a year for ABQ-only membership, or $10 a year if you are also an NFPW and NMPW member! Join us for our luncheons to support the group and to network. Please feel free to invite friends and associates to attend! Prospective members that current members bring to the lunch may receive the $15 member price at the door.
** You have news for this EGRAM, you know you do, so please send it to Susan Walton, E-Mail. This is my last edition, so rest assured I will pass anything I receive on to my replacement, so please feel free to deluge me with details, news, fun stuff, everything you like to see in copy!
