ALBUQUERQUE PRESS WOMEN Summer 2008 E-GRAM

*** Annual Meeting and Luncheon Update

Elected for two-year terms at the June annual meeting were:

President-- Dan Mayfield dmayfield@abqjournal.com

Vice President-- Elizabeth Staley

Treasurer-- Doug Swift

Secretary-- Sari Krosinsky

*** Please read the NFPW First Amendment Network (FAN) Alert at the end of this message.

** Correction of Student Member Dues--The May 24 egram contained an error in the student membership dues information. The correct annual dues amount is $26 for annual student memberships in national, state and Albuquerque.

** MarCom Mixer Date Set --Stacy Sacco reports that Albuquerque The Magazine (ATM) is co-hosting the 4th Annual NM MarCom Mixer Thursday, July 10, 2008, from 5:30--8:30 pm at ATM's new offices above REI. All members of area communication groups are invited to attend, RSVP to Stacy at sasacco@aol.com, $12 per person collected at the door, and the cover charge includes hors d'oeuvres and a 1 year subscription to ATM.

** Summer Social -- Come to the Press Club, Friday, July 25 for some networking with Press Women. Buy your own drinks and light munchies (popcorn, chips, etc) will be provided at no charge. Networking is one of our most-requested membership features, so please come prepared to "hear it all" and offer some updates of your own: 5 to 8 pm at the Albuquerque Press Club, 201 Highland Park Circle, SE 243-8476, one block west of I-25, one-and-a-half blocks south of Central. APC is a membership club, and Susan Walton is the "hosting APC member" so RSVPs (swalton@sandiaprep.org<mailto:swalton@sandiaprep.org>) are very useful, but not required if - you tell her you were invited, when you arrive at the Club.

** 2008 meeting location. The luncheon meetings after November should return to the Sheraton (Uptown) Albuquerque on Menaul at Louisiana Blvd NE.

** September Luncheon--Save Sept 8 for the next luncheon.

** Members' Dues News -- 2008 Dues are overdue. As of January's luncheon meeting, those not current with dues have been paying nonmember prices. Dues are just $35 a year for ABQ-only membership, or $10 a year if you are also an NFPW and NMPW member! Join us for our luncheons to support the group and to network. Please feel free to invite friends and associates to attend! Prospective members that current members bring to the lunch may receive the $15
member price at the door. Full-time students with student IDs will pay $10 for the monthly lunches.

** FAN Action Alert for Press Women and everyone: Please contact your attorney general! An important letter from the National Association of Attorneys General is on your own state AG's desk right now. It invites his/her support for a federal journalists' shield law, like the one in most states. If 36 of the AGs sign on in the next week, the NAAG will officially support the legislation. The bill, S 2035, is presently log-jammed in the US Senate. But the clock is ticking. We need the AG's support. And we need this bill to move to a Senate vote before Congress adjourns.

Think about former USA Today reporter Toni Locy, fined $5,000 a day for protecting her sources--and PROHIBITED by the judge's order from seeking financial help from her newspaper, her family or friends.

You can see the letter at http://www.naag.org/comments/files/39.MediaShieldLetter.pdf.
